Rock of Yuhuan

What was once an island is now just a curious rock amid a 4-mile-long dam that holds back the East China Sea and ushers in the future of the coastal Yuhuan County.
Behind the dam, construction crews are blasting away mountains and pushing them into the sea to form new land for farms, factories and shops with famous brands. The central government wants to bolster political and economic ties with nearby Taiwan. The local government wants to build a metropolis that rivals Singapore or Shanghai — a green one, to boot. As planners, we’re tasked with making this manufactured landscape a “sustainable development.” It’s a tough task, perhaps impossible, but nature seems to find a way to come back. Will the tourists and aquatic birds follow?
